Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prisoner's Medical Care.

Tony Gregory

Question:

116 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the type and amount of medication being administered to a person (details supplied) in Mountjoy Prison; if there is any course of treatment/counselling or assistance which could avoid the necessity for such medication; if this person will have additional difficulty in adjusting to normal society on release without this medication; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will appreciate that the medical care of the offender in question is a matter for the medical officer at Mountjoy Prison and that it would not be appropriate to disclose details of the medical treatment being prescribed in any individual case. The offender also has available to her within the prison a wide range of other services including psychiatric, psychological, welfare and chaplaincy to help her cope with any difficulties posed by her imprisonment and her eventual release. The nature of the treatment/counselling provided for each offender is determined on appropriate professional advice.
