Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - CAT Scanners.

Ivor Callely

Question:

145 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will outline (a) the locations of CAT scanners in this country, (b) the number of people employed to operate the scanners, (c) the demand and usage of each scanner and (d) the total cost implication of this service.

The locations of CAT scanners in the public hospital service and their demand/usage numbers are shown in the following table.

Two to three radiographers and support staff operate the CAT scanner in any one session. The cost of the service is not readily available as it is included in the overall costs for the relevant Radiology Departments.

In addition, a CAT scanner came into operation at the Sligo Regional Hospital on 26 April 1991 and the South-Eastern Health Board has recently installed a CAT scanner at the Regional Hospital in Waterford which is expected to be operational shortly.
