Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Adoption Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

162 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will outline (1) the number of adoption requests made in each year from 1985 to 1990 and (2) the numbers which have been approved in each year from 1985 to 1990; and if he will further outline in respect of cases approved (a) the waiting time for approval (b) the waiting period before the baby was given to the adoptive parents (c) the age of the adoptive parents and (d) the religion of the adoptive parents.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the number of people who have applied to the registered adoption societies and the health boards to have children placed with them for adoption. My Department has never collected this information and I understand that the Adoption Board does not collect it either. The collection of this information from the 19 registered adoption societies and the health boards would be a huge undertaking which could not be justified on cost grounds.

I am arranging to have a copy of the Adoption Board's latest annual report sent to the Deputy. The report contains a considerable amount of statistical information relating to applications for adoption orders which the Deputy might find helpful.
