Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Pre-Immigration Clearance.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

207 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the number of persons subjected to pre-immigration clearance at Shannon Airport by the US Immigration Service in 1989 and 1990; the number of persons refused entry in each year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following passenger numbers were pre-inspected by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1989 and 1990:——

Year

Passengers Processed

1990

330,629

1989

315,638

Under the Ireland/US Agreement on pre-inspection scheduled to the Air Navigation and Transport (Pre-inspection) Act, 1986 the Irish Immigration Service are informed where a person is refused passage onwards to the US and supplied with all data relevant to that decision. It would not be appropriate for me to comment on this data.
