Written Answers. - Prison Facilities.

Ivor Callely

Question:

107 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the educational, training and leisure facilities which are provided in our prison services; the cost involved in providing and running this service; and if there are plans to further develop this service.

An outline of the facilities referred to in the Deputy's question will be found in the Annual Report of Prisons and Places of Detention, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

As to costs, the salaries of teachers employed in prisons and places of detention are paid by the Department of Education, at a current annual cost of approximately £1.75 million. In addition, the following provision is made in the Prisons Vote for 1991: Education and Library Services — £325,000; Training Equipment and Materials — it is estimated that the cost of providing equipment-materials in 1991 will amount to £232,000, of which £80,000 will be recouped from the European Social Fund; Cost of Materials, Tools etc. — provision has been made for expenditure amounting to £500,000. It is estimated that £400,000 will be realised in receipts arising from the sale of manufactured products; Leisure — recreational equipment and supplies — the estimated cost for 1991 is £235,000. These services are continually monitored with a view to their development and improvement.
