Question:

112 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice the number of community service orders issued by the courts in the Cork area in 1989 and 1990; the number of these which were actually completed; the sanctions imposed where orders were not completed; and the instances where sanctions were not imposed.

There were 112 community service orders made by the courts in the Cork area during 1989. A total of 91 were completed and four were extended following application to the courts. Proceedings were commenced against 17 offenders for non-compliance and, of them, ten were sentenced to imprisonment-detention, one was given a suspended sentence of imprisonment, two are still due to appear in court and four were not dealt with as they had left the jurisdiction.

There were 111 community service orders made in 1990. A total of 71 were completed, 35 are in progress and five offenders have had sentences of imprisonment imposed for non-compliance.
