Vol. 408 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Strength.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

113 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda who will complete their training this year and commence work on the beat; when the 1,000 new recruits which were announced recently will commence training; and when the first of these will be made permanent.

Approximately 350 Garda trainees will be attested to the force this year having completed 62 weeks training, and will be available for operational duties. A total of 87 of these will complete their two year training schedule before the end of 1991. A further 261 gardaí who were attested last year will have completed the twoyear training schedule before the end of 1991.

The competition to recruit the 1,000 new Garda trainees recently approved by Government will be advertised shortly. The first successful applicants from this competition are expected to commence training in the Garda college in early April 1992 and will be attested to the force 62 weeks later, i.e. during the month of June 1993.
