Vol. 408 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Kildare Schools Facilities.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

63 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if, following her recent visit to the Maynooth Post-Primary School, in County Kildare her attention has been drawn to the urgent need to provide extra facilities to accommodate the extra enrolment; whether her visit is likely to prove instrumental in expediting action in the case; if the school authorities can, as a result of her visit, expect an advanced schedule for the provision of facilities required; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Having regard to demographic trends and current and projected enrolments at primary and post-primary level in the Maynooth area, my Department do not accept that the provision of a major extension, as proposed, to cater for 800 pupils overall is now warranted.

My Department would, however, give careful consideration to any application for the provision of extra accommodation at Maynooth Vocational School to cater for short term needs, if required.

Question:

64 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education if during a recent visit to Scoil Uí Dhálaigh, Leixlip, County Kildare she has satisfied herself as to the urgency of the extra facilities requested by the school authorities; whether she has since taken any measures likely to expedite the process in the case with particular reference to allowing the project to tender; if as a result of her visit she will outline an advanced schedule for the provision of the facilities required; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am pleased to let the Deputy know that I have approved the invitation of tenders for the project. My Department's planning and building unit will be writing to the chairperson of the board of management at an early date.
