Vol. 408 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fenit Harbour (Kerry) Development.

Dick Spring

Question:

30 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline any development plans which his Department have in relation to Fenit Harbour, County Kerry; and if European Structural Funds will be available for important works to be carried out thereat.

Tralee and Fenit Pier and Harbour Commissioners are the governing body of Fenit Harbour. The question of the development of the harbour is a matter for the Commissioners, who, in the recent past have submitted two separate proposals for developments at Fenit Harbour.

In the context of EC Structural Funds for port development, the Harbour Commissioners submitted a development plan, which they estimated to cost £2.693 million. The Commissioners were advised by my Department on 11 August 1989 that it had not been possible to make provision in the National Development Plan for their proposals.
Proposals were also made for major dredging works under my Department's fishery harbour development programme. It was not possible to include Fenit in this programme. However, I am pleased to inform the Deputy that I approved the award of a State grant of £10,000 to the Commissioners towards the cost of dredging at the commercial berths, the pier head and the turning circle at Fenit Harbour. The grant was paid on 19 October 1990.
