Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Mayo Garda Station Projects.

Enda Kenny

Question:

125 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the progress which has been made in improving and in the provision of proper accommodation, equipment and facilities at the Garda headquarters in Castlebar, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in reply to Question No. 142 on 11 December 1990, it is proposed to build a major extension to the Garda station in Castlebar, County Mayo. The extension will provide the gardaí in Castlebar with the accommodation and facilities necessary in a modern divisional headquarters. However, it is not possible to indicate, at this stage, when work on the project will commence but the Deputy can be assured that there will be no avoidable delay.

A sum in excess of £21,000 has been spent since 1989 in carrying out some essential improvements to the existing building.

Enda Kenny

Question:

126 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice the proposals which have been made in relation to the provision of a new Garda station at Ballinrobe, County Mayo; and if, in view of the deplorable conditions under which gardaí have to carry out their duties at present, he will make arrangements for the provision of a new station as soon as possible; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in reply to Question No. 142 on 11 December 1990, a site has been purchased for the erection of a new Garda station in Ballinrobe, County Mayo. At this stage, it is not possible to say when work will commence on the project but the Deputy can be assured that there will be no avoidable delay.
