Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Housing Conditions.

Bernard Allen

Question:

137 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment the action he intends to take to alleviate the serious overcrowded conditions which tenants on Cork Corporation's transfer list are experiencing at present.

I refer to the reply to Question No. 41 of 7 May 1991; the position in relation to the rehousing of tenants on the transfer list are identical for all housing authorities.

I would draw attention to the increased capital allocation to Cork Corporation this year for the provision of local authority housing. The 1991 allocation of £1,763,000 represents an increase of 107 per cent on the 1990 figure of £850,000 and will enable the corporation to complete work on 56 houses and to commence a further 50 new dwellings.

In addition, the initiatives announced in A Plan for Social Housing provide tenants in overcrowded conditions with further opportunities of obtaining alternative accommodation suitable to their needs.
