Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Deaf Children Numbers.

Bernard Allen

Question:

158 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of children registered as being deaf in Ireland; and if he proposes to provide precise figures on the incidence of hearing loss among children here.

There is no formal register of deaf children available. It is estimated that there are approximately 1,500 deaf children in this country.

The incidence of hearing loss among children is approximately one in every thousand at birth and a further one in every thousand at other stages of childhood.
