Question:

161 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of temporary nurses employed in Southern Health Board hospitals; and if he will outline the figure as a percentage of the overall nursing staff.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows: 283 temporary nurses are currently employed by the Southern Health Board. This figure represents 10 per cent of the total nursing staff; 2,822.

162 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health the number of trainee nurses working in the Southern Health Board hospitals; and if he will outline this figure as a percentage of the overall numbers.

There are at present 272 student nurses in general training and 14 student nurses in psychiatric training in the hospitals of the Southern Health Board.

This represents approximately 7.5 per cent of the total number of students undertaking basic training in the public health service at present and 10 per cent of the total nursing staff employed by the Southern Health Board.
