Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Student Grants.

Jim Higgins

Question:

173 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the number of students from each county who qualified for the first time for (a) higher education grants, (b) vocational education committee grants and (c) ESF grants in each of the years between 1986 and 1990.

The information requested by the Deputy in so far as higher education grants and vocational education committee scholarships is concerned is set out in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate with the official report.

Information in respect of those who qualified for the first time for ESF grants is not available in the Department. However, the total numbers of such grant holders in third-level education in the year in question is as follows:— 1986/87, 10,718; 1987/88, 11,856; 1988/89, 12,703; 1989/90, 19,371; 1990/91, 20,819.
