Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Employment Pilot Projects.

Bernard Allen

Question:

101 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Labour the number of companies which have been set up by his Department to operate pilot projects on an area-based response to long term unemployment; and if he will outline the money which has been invested in these companies.

The process of establishing a local company in each of the 12 areas selected for pilot projects is continuing. To facilitate the maximum local contribution to this process, interim boards, representative of local communities, public agencies and the social partners, are being established.

The interim board for Coolock-Darndale had their first meeting on 16 May. The first meetings of the interim boards for south west Wexford, west Waterford and south Kerry will take place on 24 May and of the interim board for Cork north city on 31 May.

Discussions between the national team, acting on behalf of the Central Review Committee of theProgramme for Economic and Social Progress and representatives of statutory, community and other interests in the remaining areas are ongoing. The first meetings of the interim boards for these areas will be arranged at the earliest opportunity.
The amount of money spent to date in establishing the interim boards is minimal.
