Vol. 409 No. 2

Written Answers. - Minimum Wage Scheme.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

31 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Labour if he has any plans to implement a statutory minimum wage scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I have informed the House on many occasions I have no plans to introduce a statutory minimum wage. The question of a statutory minimum wage was one of the issues discussed in the negotiations on the Programme and Economic and Social Progress. The programme provides that during the period of the programme the Employer-Labour Conference will consider all the issues relating to a statutory minimum wage, includiong the operation of the Joint Labour Committee system.
