Vol. 409 No. 2

Written Answers. - Banks Surveillance Allegations.

Dick Spring

Question:

40 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if any representations have been made, of a formal or informal kind, at diplomatic level to the British authorities in respect of allegations or alleged surveillance of Irish banks by the British intelligence service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to media reports which allege that transactions involving Irish banks were improperly monitored by foreign intelligence services. I have no information about these allegations, nor am I aware of any representations having being made through diplomatic channels.
