Vol. 409 No. 2

Written Answers. - Voluntary Housing Scheme Funding.

Edward Nealon

Question:

69 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) a Cheshire Homes special housing complex on a site adjacent to the Convent of Mercy, Sligo is being held up for almost a year by the failure of his Department to provide the share of the funds, (b) that all other organisations involved have made the appropriate moneys available and (c) that the scheme has gone to tender and a contractor has been chosen; and if in view of all these considerations and the great value the special houses will be to the needs of the area, he will immediately sanction the funding so that work can start without further delay.

My Department's involvement with the voluntary housing scheme relates primarily to the provision, within the allocation available in the public capital programme, of funds for individual projects. The administration of the scheme and the certification that particular project comply with the terms of the scheme are the responsibility of the local authority, in this instance Sligo County Council. A formal application for the funding of this project is awaited from the council.
