84 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the number of primary teachers who will retire on age grounds before 1 September 1991; and the numbers over 55 years of age and with 35 years experience who have sought retirement.

60 national school teachers will retire on age grounds (i.e. having reached 65 years of age) at the end of August 1991.

National school teachers, who have reached 55 years of age and completed 35 years pensionable service, may retire voluntarily, on pension at any time throughout the year. To date, notification of proposed voluntary retirement on pensions between now and 1 September 1991 has been received from 22 such teachers, of which seven were from teachers who had reached 55 years of age but were under 60 years of age.
