Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Litter Prosecutions.

Enda Kenny

Question:

207 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the number of prosecutions initiated under the Litter Act, 1982 for each of the past five years; if he proposes to launch a continued national campaign to highlight this unacceptable trend; if he will continue to back up community efforts in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details as sought of prosecutions under the Litter Act, 1982 are set out in the following table.

As I have recently stated in reply to Question No. 60 of 30 May 1991, litter is the most obvious and persistent of our environmental problems, and a wide range of counter-measures is necessary to deal with it. I am at present considering a number of initiatives to improve the situation, including a national mixed media campaign which would support and complement clean-up activities organised by local authorities and community groups.
