Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ambulance Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

222 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he proposes to set up a statutory body to oversee the ambulance service to ensure that there is a uniformity of standards throughout the health board regions.

The provision of ambulance services is a matter for each health board in the first instance.

The Ambulance Services Council, which was established in 1983, is responsible for overseeing the co-ordination and development of ambulance services nationally and for the training of ambulance personnel. The chief executive officers of the health boards appoint the members of council for a three year term of office. The present council was appointed in October 1990.

I am very satisfied with the role played by the Ambulance Services Council and I have no proposals to establish a statutory body to carry out this task.
