Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Length of School Term.

Ivor Callely

Question:

224 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education whether she has given consideration to lengthening the existing school term; her views on whether any benefits would arise through such action; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Primary Education Review Body examined the issues relating to the length of the school day and the school year. In their report, the review body recommended a model for the length of the primary school year based on schools operating for purposes of teaching for 184 days in the year.

In a detailed statement on the report of the review body, I said that I intended to implement this recommendation. This will be done by way of a circular letter.

Second level schools generally are required to be in operation for a minimum of 180 days each school year and this can include up to 12 days on which certificate examinations are held.
