Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Skreen (Sligo) Accommodation.

Edward Nealon

Question:

236 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) at High Park national school, Skreen, County Sligo there is serious overcrowding because of the very limited classroom space available and (b) with 28 and 31 pupils in the two classrooms available, there is much less space available than the regulation of 15 square feet per pupil; and if, in view of all this, it is her intention to make arrangements for the necessary extra space to be provided in accordance with the request made to her by the board of management.

The school has three teachers and had an average enrolment of 98 in September 1990. Accommodation consists of a permanent building containing two classrooms provided in 1963 and an extension of a classroom and a staff room provided in 1988. My Department have no record of any application from the school authorities for the provision of additional classroom space at the school. If such an application is submitted it will be fully considered in consultation with my Department's professional staff.

In February 1990 the school authorities sought the provision of a general purposes room. However, it was not possible to accede to this because of my policy of conscentrating the available capital resources on the provision of essential classroom accommodation and other necessary facilities.
