Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Schools Staffing.

Richard Bruton

Question:

240 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the arrangements she is making for schools which are only marginally short for the allocation of an extra teacher, such as a school (details supplied) in Dublin 3 where the lack of the extra teacher will cause considerable disruption to classes.

As the Deputy will be aware the staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement between the Government and INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

In the case of Eoin Baisde Senior Girls national school there were 449 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1990, which warrants a staff of principal plus 13 assistants for the 1991-92 school year. The school will also have the services of a full-time remedial teacher.
The only exceptions that can be made to the agreed staffing arrangements are in the case of developing schools or where my Department's guidelines on maximum class sizes are being breached. If the school authorities feel that the school may qualify under either of these exceptions my Department will be happy to examine any application received.
