Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork Barracks, Surgical Unit.

Peter Barry

Question:

243 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the position of the staff attached to the surgical unit in Collins Barracks, Cork after 1 June 1991; and if, before making the decision to shut the unit, he will consider the inconvenience of transporting personnel needing surgical care to Dublin or the Curragh and also the inconvenience to their families who would wish to visit them.

In the interests of efficiency and economy it has been decided that surgical procedures under general anaesthetic should be discontinued at the Military Hospital, Collins Barracks, Cork. In recent years, surgery carried out at the hospital has generally been of a minor nature only.

With effect from 1 June 1991, members of the Permanent Defence Force in the Cork area who require surgical treatment will in general be treated in local civilian hospitals.

The only staff of the hospital affected by the decision referred to above is one member of the Army nursing service. In that regard it is envisaged that for the foreseeable future the person in question will be assigned to other duties in the hospital.
