Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Howth Dublin Harbour.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Question:

55 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine if, in view of the fact that Howth harbour is understaffed, he will provide adequate personnel in order that the proper working of Ireland's major white fish port on the east coast functions properly.

Arrangements are well advanced for filling the harbourmaster vacancy in Howth.

Question:

56 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine if, having regard to the lack of security on the east and west piers in Howth harbour, he will take immediate steps to provide round the clock security; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Department employs three full time harbour constables on security and other work at Howth. These provide reasonable security at the harbour during working hours and regular Garda patrols also take place. Security fencing has also been erected where required and other similar measures to improve physical security are under consideration.

Question:

57 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine if he will arrange for immediate maintenance to be carried out to the synchrolift at Howth harbour; and if will take steps to provide new carriages as the carriages which were supplied eight years ago are damaged and in need of replacement.

The synchrolift facility at Howth, County Dublin, is, at present, fully operational. Some minor maintenance repairs are currently being carried out.

The provision of new carriages for the lift and, in particular, the replacement of existing carriages is being considered.

Question:

58 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine if, having regard to the lettings on the west pier of Howth harbour and in particular condition 11 in the letting agreements, he will ensure that a key will be available to fishermen and that it will be provided to a designated person, nominated by the fishermen, in order that they may have access to gear at all times.

Condition 11 of the letting agreement states that access shall be at such time as determined by harbour staff.

Following consultation with local fishermen, satisfactory arrangements whereby access is available to the gear storage area at all reasonable working times have been put in place.

Question:

59 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for the Marine if he will arrange for the provision of rubbish skips on all piers in Howth harbour; and if he will ensure the provision of these skips on a regular basis.

There is a rubbish skip available on the west pier for disposal of waste from boats and industries at this pier; this skip is emptied regularly.

There are also facilities for collection of litter on the east pier and it is considered that a skip is not required in the amenity area.
