A total of £150,000 was spent on major conservation works at Ballylahan Castle, Cong Abbey, Errew Abbey, Moyne Abbey and Burrincarra Churches over the past five years. Works on the restoration of the Chapter House at Ballintubber Abbey are in progress and it is estimated these will cost £60,000. It is proposed to provide an interpretative centre at the Ceide Fields, Ballycastle, at an estimated cost of £2 million. Works are due to begin in the near future.
Routine maintenance works are carried out on a regular basis at all national monuments in State care. It is not possible to isolate the expenditure for each monument as allocations are made on a block basis to national monuments districts for the maintenance and upkeep of monuments.
There are no proposals at present to take any further monuments in County Mayo into State care.
