Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Refunds.

John Connor

Question:

72 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance the reason for the delay in issuing tax rebates in respect of the years 1988-89 and 1989-90 to a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon; and if he will establish from the Revenue Commissioners whether these rebates will be made.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the refunds in question are in respect of loss relief for the years 1987/88 and 1988/89.

PAYE balancing statements for 1987/88 and 1988/89 incorporating loss relief of £1,037 and £997 respectively, were issued to the taxpayer on 29 May 1991. Cheques for the amounts overpaid i.e. £297.27 for the year 1987/88 and £349.44 for the year 1988/89 will be issued to him within the next ten days.
The application for loss relief was received in February 1991. The delay arose because the taxpayer's affairs were dealt with in two separate tax districts. The claim was not dealt with immediately in the second district because of the heavy workload at the particular time of the year.
