Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Flour Milling Industry.

Peter Barry

Question:

76 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to a media report (details supplied) where the managing director of a major milling company said that there would be further job losses if the present dog-eat-dog activity among flour millers continues; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that 65 of the jobs at risk are in Cork; and if he will outline his proposals to save these jobs.

While I am aware of the concerns expressed in the media report referred to, I am not aware of any plans to close the particular plant mentioned.

The Irish flour milling industry is predominantly home market oriented with two main groups competing for market share. Capacity in the industry is more than adequate to meet demand and there is pressure from imported flour.

Obviously, therefore, if the industry is to remain viable, it is essential that it improve its competitiveness by measures such as modernisation, rationalisation and expansion into downstream activities.
