Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Rape Crisis Centre Funding.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

130 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has a projected expenditure of £300,000 for 1991 and that this centre is facing a critical financial situation; and if he has plans to give any funding to this centre or to recognise the need for this centre to be funded on a guaranteed basis for the important work that it does for the public health.

In 1990 funding for the various rape crisis centres, including the centre in Dublin, was provided from the special allocation of £0.5 million for women's programmes administered by my colleague, the Minister for Social Welfare. A similar sum is available to the Minister for Social Welfare this year and I understand that a request for funding from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is currently under consideration.

The centre also received a grant of £21,500 from the Eastern Health Board in 1990. While the final amount payable in 1991 has still to be determined by the board, I understand that interim payments amounting to approximately half the grant paid in 1990 have already been made.
