Written Answers. - Fitness Instructor Courses.

Question:

139 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the courses which are available for students who wish to secure qualification as fitness instructors or fitness coaches; whether her attention has been drawn to the growth of fitness centres of various types which seek such qualifications; if her attention has further been drawn to the fact that a number of private institutions are offering such qualification courses at a very high level of fees; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Minister for Education (Mrs. O'Rourke)

A two year course leading to a certificate in exercise and fitness instruction is available in Thomond College of Education, Limerick. The certificate is awarded jointly with the college and the Physical Education Association of Ireland (PEAI) and is designed to cater for people who are working or who wish to work in the fitness area.

I am not aware of the situation in relation to private institutions nor has my attention been drawn to the matter.

Suitably qualified physical education teachers for our second level schools are provided by means of a four year degree course in Thomond College.
