Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Kilkenny Schools.

Liam Aylward

Question:

146 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Education when a decision will be made to have proper accommodation provided in the girls' and boys' national schools in St. John's Parish, Kilkenny, where discussions have been taking place between her Department and the board of management since 1974 and where accommodation needs to be provided as a matter of urgency; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have been in ongoing discussions with the authorities of the boys' and girls' national schools in St. John's Parish, Kilkenny, regarding suitable arrangements for the schools both from the educational and accommodation points of view. It is proposed to provide an extension of two classrooms and ancillary accommodation to the boys' school and to upgrade and modernise the girls' and infants' school premises. These proposals have been agreed with the schools' authorities.

I fully appreciate the urgency in relation to these schools and I can assure the Deputy that every effort will be made to deal with the various stages of architectural planning expeditiously. I will keep the Deputy fully advised on developments in this matter.
