Vol. 409 No. 9

Written Answers. - Holyhead-Eurotunnel Railway Upgrading.

Peter Barry

Question:

36 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will make representations to the United Kingdom Government to upgrade the railway from Holyhead to the Eurotunnel to help get Irish goods to the European markets with the least possible delay.

The upgrading of rail links from Holyhead to the Channel tunnel is an important element in the Government's strategy for the development of Irish trade and the reduction of the adverse effects of Ireland's peripherality.

Discussions have been taking place with the UK authorities regarding the upgrading of rail links to the Channel tunnel and further discussions are planned. In addition, I have taken this matter up directly with the Secretary of State for Transport and have informed him of our interest in the upgrading of the Holyhead-Crewe railway line and the development of through services to the Channel tunnel because of the significant economic benefit which this would have for this country.

I can assure the House that I will continue to emphasise the need for improved rail access to the Channel tunnel for Irish exporters.
