Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cork Industrial Development.

Peter Barry

Question:

262 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there is any evidence available which supports the view that, because of planning objections, foreign industrialists are reluctant to establish in Cork.

The fear of undue delay caused by appeals after a company has been granted planning permission is of concern to potential investors. This applies not only to the Cork area, but the country as a whole. I am aware of a number of instances in the recent past where concern regarding the planning process has been expressed to the IDA, local authorities and, indeed, to me.

In so far as Cork is concerned, I understand from the IDA that because of perceived planning difficulties two potential investors have decided not to give Cork further consideration.

I am, however, confident that the particular difficulties experienced in the Cork area are now behind us. Industry is now more open and communicative, while we in Government have also taken steps to allay local community fears. The establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency will be particularly helpful in this respect.
