Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sellafield Nuclear Station Proposed Expansion.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

281 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for Energy if the Government lodged an objection with the British authorities regarding the further development of Sellafield; and if he will outline the last date on which the Government was in contact with the British or Sellafield authorities on the matter.

289.

asked he Minister for Energy if he will outline his Department's present position and the action which is proposed to be taken in view of stated plans for an expansion of activities at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 281 and 289 together.

The Government remain opposed to any expansion of activities at Sellafield. The Government's concern in regard to the proposal for an underground repository at Sellafield for radioactive waste has been conveyed to the UK authorities at ministerial and official level. This matter was last raised with the UK authorities on 9 September 1991.

Further extensive investigation by the UK authorities of the proposed site is necessary. My Department have taken steps to keep as fully informed as possible on the outcome of these investigations and will keep in close touch with further developments in the matter. I will review the question of what further action the Government may take in the matter in the light of such information and developments.
