Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Court Officials Dispute.

Michael Noonan

Question:

374 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice if he will intervene in the dispute concerning District Court officials and Circuit Court officials; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Officials of my Department, on my behalf, have been involved in negotiations to resolve the industrial action undertaken by clerical staff in courts offices who are members of the Civil and Public Service Union.

The stance adopted by the officials in the discussions was a most flexible and conciliatory one, notwithstanding the refusal of the union to suspend industrial action during the discussions. However, after lengthy talks the union on 10 October refused to accept my offer of an increase of almost 50 per cent in the number of upgradings previously offered.

I am disappointed at the attitude of the union to what was by any standards a reasonable and generous offer and I have appealed to the members of the Civil and Public Service Union to resume normal working arrangements.
