Question:

378 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the total number of gun licences which were issued last year; and the weapons and numbers for which these licences were issued.

Statistics of firearm certificates issued to persons resident in the State are compiled by the Garda Síochána on the basis of the year ending 31 July, while statistics of firearms certificates issued to non-residents by my Department and the Wildlife Service of the Office of Public Works relate to the calendar year.

The statistics of firearm certificates issued last year are:

1. Residents of the State, 1 August, 1990 to 31 July, 1991

*A small additional number, on average 17 each year, of firearm certificates for rifles are issued by the Customs and Excise Branch of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners.
