Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Drugs Abuse.

Michael Bell

Question:

385 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice whether the distribution of drugs has been investigated in the major housing estate in Drogheda, County Louth on the south side of Drogheda every Friday evening when every resident in the area is aware of what is taking place; the action he intends to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the problem of drug abuse in Drogheda as elsewhere is monitored very closely by them and all appropriate steps are taken to investigate any illegal drug dealing or drug abuse and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

I have also been informed that the problem relates to a small amount of cannabis abuse. This problem is receiving every attention from the gardaí and so far this year seven people have been or are before the courts in relation to drug abuse in the Drogheda area, two of whom have been convicted for possession of drugs with intent to supply others.
The Garda authorities have informed me that the problem will continue to be monitored by them and whatever further action may be required to tackle the problem in the area will be taken.
Should the Deputy or any person have information in relation to drug abuse in the area they should of course bring it immediately to the attention of the Garda Síochána.
