Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Construction of Clondalkin (Dublin) Road.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

475 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for the Environment when it is intended to complete the construction of Fonthill Road in Clondalkin, Dublin 22 and thus enable the development of the new town to be completed.

This scheme involves the provision of a new single carriageway road from the Galway Road at Fonthill to Newlands Cross. As the road will not form part of the network of national roads, the timing of construction work on it is primarily a matter for Dublin County Council. The cost of the work would normally fall to be financed by the local authority from its own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants for regional and county roads allocated annually by my Department. Two sections of the road have already been provided, with special road grant assistance from the Department. The question of providing such assistance towards the cost of the remaining sections of the road will be considered in the context of the determination of the road grant allocations for future years, having regard to the overall level of funds available for such grants and the competing demands of other schemes throughout the country.
