Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Gluten-Free Meals.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

556 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if he will outline, with reference to Parliamentary Question No. 148 of 30 April 1991, whether his Department have now raised the question of the wider availability of gluten-free meals with the Irish Hotels Federation and the Restaurants Association of Ireland; and if so, the response received.

In line with the assurances I gave the Deputy, the health promotion unit of my Department raised the issue referred to by the Deputy with the Restaurants Association of Ireland and the Irish Hotels Federation. The unit referred to the difficulty of obtaining gluten-free meals in respect of persons diagnosed as having a coeliac condition. It also requested both organisations to raise awareness among their members of the need of potential customers to consume gluten-free food, to advertise the availability of such foods and to widen availability.
