Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Home/Liaison Teachers.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

617 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education the number of home/school liaison teachers at primary level; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A total of 45 home/school liaison teacher posts have now been allocated at primary level. This includes an additional 15 posts allocated in the current year. The scheme now embraces 80 primary schools involving 26,586 pupils in selected areas.

In each area, the home/school liaison teacher acts in support of local schools in establishing contact with parents, encouraging parents to become involved in their children's education, organising locally based activities which contribute to closer contact between parents and teachers and establishing links with pre-school and other voluntary and statutory groups in the area.
