Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

620 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if she will outline (a) the total number of remedial teachers at primary level, (b) the total number of remedial English teachers at primary level, (c) the total number of remedial maths teachers at primary level and (d) the total number of remedial teachers of both english and maths at primary level; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There are currently 967 remedial teachers at primary school level.

Posts are not specified as for "remedial English" or "remedial mathematics". The role of the remedial teacher is to address any aspect of a pupil's educational needs which is deemed to require special attention. The precise focus of a particular remedial teacher's attention will be dictated by the needs of the pupils concerned.
