Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Semi-State Companies' Audit System.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

707 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Defence if, in respect of each semi-State company responsible to his Department, he will outline (a) the type of internal audit system which has been established (b) when it commenced to function (c) the way in which it functions and (d) to whom it reports; whether he has satisfied himself that the system combines the necessary elements of scrutiny and managerial autonomy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no semi-State company responsible to my Department. Cóiste An Asgard, however, a company limited by guarantee for the management of the sail-training vessel, Asgard II, operates under the aegis of my Department.

The staff of An Cóiste comprises a secretary, an administrative assistant and five regular crew members. Their accounts are audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General. Because of its nature and size, the establishment of a special internal audit system is not necessary. The other information requested by the Deputy, does not, therefore, arise.
