Question:

710 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline (a) the number and (b) areas deployed, of full-time non-clerical Civil Service positions in his Department, previously held by the categories listed following that have been replaced by private contractors in the last five years: (1) messengers and night-watchmen, (2) messengers, (3) van drivers and (4) cleaners.

*Note: Contract cleaners were engaged for the Department's Finance Branch when that branch transferred from Dublin to Galway in 1989 under the decentralisation programme. Three of the branch's former cleaners at the vacated Dublin office were absorbed into vacancies elsewhere in the Department and two were redeployed to the Department of Justice.
