Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tourist Statistics.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

719 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has an up-to-date figure on the number of visitors who came to Ireland to date in 1991 with a breakdown of the number of (a) Europeans, (b) Americans and (c) others; and the number of people who were visiting relatives.

The latest figures on visitor numbers published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) relate to the period January-June, 1991 broken down as follows:

Area of Residence

Estimated No. of Visitors

000's

Europe (inc. Britain)

1,044

North America

128

Other

43

Total

1,216(to nearest 1,000)

The CSO include a breakdown on the basis of reason for journeys e.g. visiting relatives only in their Annual Tourism and Travel Report and this will not be available for 1991 until the first half of 1992.
