Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

50 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the financial needs of the Fr. John Sullivan Resource Centre, Clane, County Kildare; if he will give favourable consideration to their application for grant-aid from the national lottery having particular regard to the extent of services provided and the worthy value of the cause; if he will make funds available in the current year or in 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A grant of £5,000 has been approved under the scheme of grants to voluntary bodies in the social services area for the organisation in question.

Arrangements are being made for the issue of a payable order as soon as possible.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

51 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of applications received from various agencies in County Kildare requesting grant assistance from the proceeds of the national lottery in 1991; if he has responded positively to any or all of these requests in the current year or if he will be in a position to do so; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The amounts allocated by the Government to my Department from national lottery funding in 1991 are as follows: £750,000 for the scheme of grants to voluntary organisations in the social services area; £750,000 for community development projects; £500,000 for the scheme of grants for locally based women's groups; and a special allocation of £100,000 for co-operative housing projects for homeless, single parents and the disabled.

Allocations are not made on a county basis. They depend on the number and nature of the applications received and are allotted following consultation with the relevant health boards where appropriate, and discussions with the voluntary and community based groups involved.

Grants amounting to £1,144,399 have been approved in the Eastern Health Board area.
