Vol. 411 No. 2

Written Answers. - Funding for KARE.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

65 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the financial requirements of KARE in Newbridge, County Kildare; if his attention has been drawn to the full extent of facilities currently being provided by the organisation and their development plans for the future; if he expects to be in a position to make further funding available, either directly or through the Eastern Health Board, to help meet their ongoing financial requirements and in recognition of local voluntary effort; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The funding of KARE is a matter for the Eastern Health Board. KARE is expected to receive a total of £468,000 from the board this year. I am aware that KARE have drawn up a development plan covering the years 1991 to 1997.

Under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress the Government are committed to providing additional funds for mental handicap services. The question of providing additional funds for KARE will be decided in the light of the priorities identified by the Eastern Health Board Central Planning Committee and the funds made available to me under the programme.
