Question:

81 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the current position with regard to the appointment of a secretary and caretaker at Confey College, Leixlip, County Kildare; if her attention has been drawn to the urgent need for such appointments; if provision is being made currently or in 1992 to meet this requirement; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 77 and 81 together.

Two requests were received by my Department in the last year from County Kildare Vocational Education Committee for the appointment of secretaries for their schools.

Clerical and maintenance staff are allocated to vocational education committees on a scheme basis and it is a matter for the VEC to deploy such staff as they deem appropriate to the scheme's requirements. In November 1990, my Department sanctioned two maintenance posts for the scheme and two additional clerical posts were sanctioned in March 1991. As a result, it is understood that County Kildare VEC have clerical and caretaking services at all the schools in its scheme, including Confey College, Leixlip.
