Vol. 411 No. 4

Written Answers. - Down's Syndrome Studies.

Ivor Callely

Question:

194 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of recent studies on the number of Down's Syndrome cases in Ireland and any noticeably geographic prevalence of this condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the Health Research Board Eurocat Report on the Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies in the Eastern Health Board Region 1980-1987. The report indicates that the incidence of Down's Syndrome per 10,000 total births fell from 19.8 in 1980 to 15.1 in 1987. Since incidence figures are only available in the Eastern Health Board region, it is not possible to produce comparative figures for different parts of the country.
