Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Longford Road Network.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

163 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the serious situation of the county road network in County Longford, he will consider giving an extra allocation in the 1992 grant to enable Longford County Council to tackle this very urgent problem.

Responsibility for the improvement of county roads rests with the local authority concerned and the cost of such works falls to be financed by the authority from its own resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants provided annually by my Department. The discretionary road grant allocation to Longford County Council in 1991 amounts to £1,454,000, including a supplementary grant of £350,000 for improvement works because of the special needs of the county. I am satisfied that this is an equitable proportion of the overall funds available for such grants and I intend that the council will continue to get an equitable share of grants in the future.
